'Spring Summer 2016 is a season that is at once urban, romantic and futuristic with the common theme of celebrating the confident, desirable and independent woman. The season debuted a number of new themes, the most prominent of which was the lingerie inspired ‘New Romanticism’ a combination of simplicity, femininity and fragility with a nostalgic mood. Victorian inspired dressing remains in fashion’s spotlight for this season with a focus on layering and Victorian inspired florals. There was a slightly darker spin on the theme with key pieces this season including bustiers and corsets featuring beautiful lace in all its forms. Many designers showcased a new exuberance with unconventional maximalism appealing to the peacocks among us with its ‘more is more’ mantra. With “Eccentric Maximalism” expect a mixture of styles and textures with sequins and sparkle never looking so good! ‘Remastered Stripes’ materialised on the catwalks in many forms from thick and thin, horizontal to vertical, monotone to multi-coloured. A more practical bohemian emerges in ‘Cultural Horizons’ with inspiration gleaned from across the globe from Japan to Africa and Spain to India. Sportswear and the 1970s continue to influence and inspire with a younger, sportier interpretation in 70s Gym Class. Gone are sharp angular constructions as a modernist mood surfaces for SS16 in ‘Simplexity’ with designers focusing on softly layered shapes and modern construction. “All in all, the season is one of profusion, contrasts and contradictions with references to the past and promises of the future. Night mingles with day along with maximalism and minimalism both dominating. Brown Thomas sees lots of newness with the introduction of exciting new labels - Balmain, Mugler, Marques’ Almeida, Nina Ricci and MO&Co to name but a few.
